DUDLEY COURT

Dudley Court, a residential and commercial building located on Edgware Road in London, has recently received an external face-lift courtesy of Szerelmey. The building was constructed in 1934 and comprises nine floors and a flat roof constructed over a substantial single storey basement.

Working for Alan Foster and Associates, Szerelmey has undertaken cleaning and restoration works on this project, comprising the refurbishment of all external façades and lightwells, consisting of natural and reconstituted Portland stone and handmade brickwork. Also involved in the work was the redecoration of the windows, including cutting out and renewing the mastic.

As the building was fully occupied, not only by residents in the apartments on the upper storeys, but also commercial premises occupied the ground floor, there were many restraints that had to be taken into consideration whilst carrying out the works, such as the arrangement of the scaffolding, which had to be sympathetic to allow customers to have full use of the restaurants and retail units.

Szerelmey also installed a discrete anode system of Cathodic Protection to the façades and the treatment of the corroded steel. This proved to cause a slight delay in the programme as the steel was in a worst state than initially anticipated. Working closely with the project engineers, Arup, details and specifications were drawn up as works progressed.
