Mosaic

Other Materials

What is it: Mosaics are patterned areas created through assembling small pieces of coloured glass, stone or ceramic called tesserae. This is an ancient technique that is labour intensive.

Characteristics: Mosaics can be produced to any design or pattern and in virtually any colour. They are expensive and labour intensive to produce but result in totally bespoke and unique finishes.

Suitability: Depending on the material of the tesserae they can be used for external or internal use for flooring or as decorative details. Also suitable for swimming pools and spas.

Glazed Brick

What is it: As it sounds, glazed brick is literally just a brick that is glazed with a ceramic coating.

Characteristics: Uniform in shape these bricks can be glazed to a wide range of different flat colours, without pattern on the surface. These bricks are very durable and easy to clean.

Suitability: External walling, external furniture and internal applications.

Brick

Other Materials

What is it: A common construction material formed in regular blocks, traditionally composed of sand and clay but can be made from other materials.

Characteristics: Uniform in shape and relatively limited in colour options ranging from browns to reds, yellows and greys. Very durable and used frequently in construction.

Suitability: External walling, hard landscaping and internal applications.

Terracotta

Other Materials

What is it: Terracotta is an ancient material that is literally just baked clay – it needs to be fired at around 1200c to fix the stability of the clay suitable for use in construction.

Characteristics: It is an unglazed material and has the appearance of natural clay, sometimes with added minerals. Generally a rustic pink or creamy-grey in colour. Can have a clear glaze applied which keeps the natural colour but makes maintenance easy.

Suitability: Can be used for external cladding and internal applications including highly decorative details.

Pyrolave

Other Materials

What is it: Pyrolave is glazed basalt. The basalt quarried from a French National Park in the Auvergne.

Characteristics: Can be glazed in a very wide range of colours to produce a generally flat surface finish with no pattern unless applied. Some flexibility on profiles, and treated as stone, durable and easy to clean.

Suitability: Suitable for external cladding and internal applications, swimming pools and spas.

Terrazzo

Other Materials

What is it: Terrazzo is a composite material that consists of chips of marble, granite, quartz, glass or other hard materials set in cementitious binder or resin.

Characteristics: Lively surface and pattern, great flexibility in colour and pattern from random to designed. Durable and easy to clean. Some flexibility in profiles. Can be precast, panels or poured.

Suitability: Frequently seen in interior flooring but can be used for external purposes including flooring, cladding and detailing.

Faience

Other Materials

What is it: Faience is literally just glazed terracotta and terracotta is “baked clay.”

Characteristics: gloss or matt finishes available and virtually any colour with a wide-ranging variety of pattern and surface texture. Great flexibility in shape and profile, durable and easy to clean.

Suitability: External or internal cladding installed as fully grouted or open-jointed rainscreen, spas.
